Jamshedpur, Jan. 6: The state government is evolving a five-year-plan to develop infrastructure in all the constituent colleges.
According to sources, work on the five-year-plan has already started. The state human resources development department has convened a meeting of the vice-chancellors of all the three universities — Ranchi University, Vinoba Bhave University and Sidhu Kanhu University — at Ranchi from January 17.
The principals of all the constituent colleges under these universities have also been asked to attend the three-day meeting.
Human resources development secretary A.K. Singh said the meeting would decide the course of action based on the priority of the respective colleges.
“In the first phase, emphasis will be laid on the development of buildings, laboratories and libraries. In the second phase, electrification, bench, desk and other requirements will also be taken care of,” Singh said.
Singh was in the city to inaugurate the 44th Ranchi University Inter-college Athletic meet at Jamshedpur Co-operative College. He hinted that the inspection of buildings has already started. “The reports received by the department from the inspection authorities are not satisfactory and I might soon inspect some colleges personally,” Singh said.
Reacting sharply to the poor quality of construction work, he said the monitoring system would be set up before the implementation of the five-year plan. “Over the past year, the government has released about Rs 10 crore for the development of infrastructure in colleges, but according to reports, work is sub standard almost everywhere.”
Singh also inspected construction work of the multi-purpose examination hall at the Co-operative College, which was stopped following an inspection by university engineers in which they had objected to the quality of work. He asked the principal of the college, N.N. Thakur, to appoint an engineer to monitor construction work so that these problems do not occur. Fund is not a problem, but quality cannot be compromised, he said.
