Jamshedpur, Jan. 2: With pre-board examinations knocking at the doors, students are spending sleepless nights burning the midnight oil.
Although most city schools, affiliated either to the Indian Certificate Secondary Education (ICSE) board or Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), will conduct their pre-board examinations from January 6 after they reopen post-vacation, a few institutions have scheduled their examinations for January 3.
?Practical examinations for the science section of class XII will begin on January 3 ? the day our school reopens. I have studied the best I could. All I can do now is wait for the papers,? said Ankit Gaurav, a Class-XII student of CBSE-affiliated Vidya Bharti Chinmaya Vidyalaya (VBCV).
Debashish Das, another VBCV student, is a tad luckier. ?My practical papers begin from January 5. Our dates vary owing to the different combination of subjects. But no matter what the dates are, examination fear has been haunting all of us,? he said.
According to DBMS English School student Priyabrata Sathpathy, at least eight hours of studies is the need of the hour. ?Science students have to put in so much. I?m tensed but it is not as bad as what I went through during my first pre-board examinations in Class X,? he said. DBMS begins its pre-board examinations on January 6.
S. Mansi, an Arts student of Sacred Heart Convent School, however, believes four to five hours of studies is enough. Completely preoccupied with her preparations for her examinations which begin on January 3, Mansi feels it is too early to decide how she would fare.
More than the Class XII students, it is Class X students who are at their wits? end ?the next two years of their academic life depends on their performance in these examinations. ?We finished three papers before winter vacations. However, the tension is gradually building up since most of the major papers are yet to go,? said Tanvi Agarwal, Class X student of Little Flower School. Tanvi has her examinations from January 6.
For Class X student Soumya Shaw of Hill Top School, it is just a routine preparation. ?There?s no point being so psyched out. If students take the pre-board examination without getting tensed, they are sure to perform better in the boards. However, a little bit of anxiety does help spur us on,? she said. Hill Top School begins its pre-board examinations this Thursday.
Despite the tension and the toil, students have found their own ways to unwind in between long study hours. While for Priyabrata, half-an-hour of Cartoon Network does the trick, Debashish prefers to listen to some music to relax and freshen up. ?I believe watching television, especially news, at this time is not a very good idea. We need to relax and cartoons and music channels are the best options,? Tanvi opines.
