Visitors to the steel city arriving by trains will soon be greeted with news about the state like various government programmes and schemes, besides updates about the situation on roads, as they walk out of Tatanagar station.

The East Singhbhum district administration, after getting clearance from the railways, has installed a giant LED screen, flashing all these information and more, right next to the station's parking lot.

The digital signage with a dimension of 10ftx9ft was originally put up adjacent to Bistupur police station near Bistupur roundabout. However, the district administration had to re-think on its location following complaints of traffic disruptions as the LED screen distracted those behind the steering wheel.

Consequently, advertisement agency Mark Ad, which had bagged the tender from the state information and public relations department last year for installing similar LED screens across the state and operate and maintain them for three years, was asked to shift it to near the station.

Apart from displaying important events and development schemes being undertaken by the state government, the signage will also cater information about roadblocks, agitations and any other programme that can disrupt traffic. The news will be scrolled at the bottom of the screen in an easily readable font size (over 3 inch) in both Hindi and English.

"In February this year, Mark Ad had installed the information-displaying digital screens at two locations in Jamshedpur - near Bistupur roundabout and near Sakchi highway. But there were complaints of the screens distracting the attention of motorists near Bistupur roundabout. As people stopped and stared at the screens, traffic took a beating. So, we decided to shift it to Tatanagar so that more number of visitors using rail can know about the state and its policies," East Singhbhum district public relations officer Sanjay Kumar told The Telegraph.

He added that they are trying to get power connection for the LED screen and hopeed to make it functional in a week.

Tatanagar, the only A-1 station under Chakradharpur division on Howrah-Mumbai Line, witnesses a daily footfall of around 50,000. Around 100 trains originate and run via the station, including the high-profile Rajdhani Express and Duronto.

Rail passengers welcomed the move.

"It is a good decision by the district administration as the station is frequented by several outstation visitors, including those from abroad. The screens can be also used to promote unexplored tourist destinations. Even corporate executives coming to the city for various reasons can know about the ease of doing business and look for investment opportunities," said Chotanagpur Passenger Association's senior functionary Arun Kumar Tiwary.
