Ranchi, March 25: She is driven around in a Merc, looks like an affectionate grandmother and speaks in rapid-fire Malyalam. But failure to comprehend what Mata Amritanandmayi speaks did not deter a huge crowd of devotees, and curious onlookers, to throng the zila school grounds on Saturday evening to see her.
Divinity is pouring in the state capital, which witnessed 20,000 people attending yoga camps of Baba Ramdev last month. Around 30,000 people, it is estimated, were present to see ?Amma?.
On her way to Calcutta, she is being accompanied by a 450-strong entourage, most of them being devotees and a large number of them being foreign disciples.
There are two Mercedes Benz cars, four Toyota Qualis, a Toyota Innova and eight buses to carry the devotees. Two trucks bring up the rear of the caravan and carry generators, tents and other accessories.
The ?divine Mother? herself has been put up at the palatial mansion of city-based businessman, Narayan Jalan. It took a month, confided organisers, to find out the ideal house to host her. Jalan?s house, they explained, had as many as seven vacant but spacious bedrooms, since his children have grown up and settled abroad.
Natarajan, a commerce graduate who hails from the same district as Amma, points out that her message is simple enough. She does not prescribe rules or rituals. She does not preach any belief. She just asks people to be true to themselves and to those around them.
The foreign disciples appear even more overwhelmed. ?When she gives us a hug, we feel so light?it is an out of the world experience,? said an American. His name was not important, he said.
During the day, several dignitaries, including the chief minister and the Assembly Speaker were spotted with the Amma even as the Maa Amritanandmayi Samiti announced it would distribute old-age pensions to 1,000 people.
