Covid toll crosses 50 in state, 178 new cases

70 per cent of fatalities in July

The Covid toll in Jharkhand crossed 50 on Monday as four more patients, all from East Singhbhum, breathed their last during treatment, health officials said.

Of the 53 Covid deaths reported in Jharkhand so far, 11 were from East Singhbhum and nine from capital Ranchi. The count of Covid-19 cases in the state jumped to 5,777 as 178 fresh cases of infection, from 14 districts, surfaced on Monday, data compiled by the National Health Mission (NHM) stated.

Ranchi, once again, reported the highest number of fresh Covid cases in Jharkhand on Monday, NHM data said. Seventyone fresh cases took the total count of active Covid patients in the capital to over 550.

More than 70 per cent of the state's Covid deaths have occurred in July. As per government data, the Covid toll was 15 on June 30 and it jumped to 53 by Monday night.

According to officials from the police headquarters in Ranchi, coronavirus infection further spread in the police department on Monday as 22 more cops tested positive, taking the total count of infected cops in Ranchi to 37. More than 200 policemen have been infected with the virus in Jharkhand so far, forcing the police department to seal several police stations for sanitisation works.

Sources said that around 11 employees from one branch of State Bank of India (SBI) also tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday. However, there was no official confirmation on this from the state government.

The government has so far collected samples of 2.35 lakh people and tested 2.22 lakh of them for Covid-19. Around 2.6 lakh people have been put in home quarantine in Jharkhand, while nearly 7,000 have been sent to institutional quarantine. The Covid recovery rate in Jharkhand was 49.07 per cent on Monday while the mortality rate was 0.85 per cent.
