Kolhan University has decided to invite governor Droupadi Murmu for its second convocation, which has been delayed for over a year and is now likely to be held sometime in November-December.
After trying to seek Union home minister Rajnath Singh's dates for long since last year and failing to get one, the university decided to approach the governor and host the convocation as fast as possible.
The second convocation of the university was originally planned for February 2015.
It is learnt that Kolhan vice chancellor (VC) R.P.P. Singh even met Union home minister Singh in August 2016, but failed to get time from him.
"We wanted to organise it in February 2015. I don't think it will be wise to wait any further. Students have waited for long for their degrees. So, we have decided to apprise the governor of the situation and seek a suitable date from her. If some other dignitaries are free that day, we will invite them too," said VC Singh.
The varsity had plans to organise the second convocation for 2013 and 2014 batches. But, now, varsity authorities said they would include 2015 and 2016 batches too.
Right from gold medals to degree certificates, the varsity had kept everything ready for the convocation, for which Rs 25 lakh had been earmarked, the VC said.
"The date (from a VIP guest) is the only barrier. Around 14,000 students, who have successfully completed graduation, postgraduation, BEd and vocational courses in 2013 and 2014, will receive degree certificates. Of them, 66 students will be given gold medals. With the inclusion of new batches, the number of students is certainly expected to rise," said varsity VC Singh.
The varsity had been also eyeing an August-September date, which, however, coincided with the students' union elections. Now the university is closed for Dussehra and Diwali and will reopen on November 5.
The convocation can be held only after that.
Students, many of whom have moved to other cities for higher studies or jobs, are eagerly waiting for degrees.
"I graduated in 2013 and am now working with IBM in Gurgaon. I have only my marksheet as a proof of graduation. Some of us are using provisional certificates. The university should organise the convocation soon. I am eagerly waiting for it," said Sanjeeta Sharma, who graduated from The Graduate School College for Women.
The first convocation was organised in 2013, which was attended by then Union minister Jairam Ramesh.
