Rahul Gandhi: New move |
Jamshedpur, Sept. 16: The All India Youth Congress Committee (AIYCC) and National Students Union of India (NSUI) have opened its doors to tribals in the state.
The enrolment drive of the AIYCC will start on September 19 and aims to give tribals a fair chance to join mainstream politics. The committee has also planned a tribal convention during the three-day visit of All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi in the first week of October.
“The convention will be exclusively for tribals so that they get a chance to directly interact with Rahul Gandhi and share their problems and opinions. It is the first time that Youth Congress has taken such an initiative to welcome tribals in Jharkhand into our party and contribute to the society,” said a member of the AIYCC.
Though the date for Rahul’s visit has not been finalised yet, senior members of the Youth Congress here said that he had assured his presence at the convention.
The district unit of Youth Congress has planned to organise the convention in a tribal-dominated area so that they can reach out to maximum number but did not reveal the location for security reasons. They said they are expecting an enrolment figure of about 1 lakh.
“We will be happy to make as many members as possible during the drive but there will be some criteria for selection also. We will include youths with a clean image. Those having a criminal background will be deprived of a membership. We are expecting a crowd of over 5,000 at the convention,” said a Youth Congress leader.
The NSUI will also use the occasion to increase its membership strength.
“If a student wants to be a part of NSUI, we will welcome him. We want more youths to join us for right reasons so that they can contribute to the development of the society,” said Viplab Shiladitya, the secretary of NSUI.
