Capital residents can hope to bid adieu to snarls along the 3km stretch of MG Road or Main Road from Shaheed Chowk to Overbridge from Thursday with Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) joining hands with city police to launch colour coded parking areas at 13 points.

Traffic SP Sanjay Ranjan Singh said that urban development minister C.P. Singh would inaugurate the new parking system near Albert Ekka Chowk at noon.

Three zones - green, yellow and orange - have been marked along the Main Road. "The green zone is the most economic where parking charges for initial three hours for four-wheelers is Rs 20 and two-wheelers Rs 5. There are four green slots along MG Road," said town commissioner Prashant Kumar.

In the yellow zone, four- and two-wheelers can park for Rs 30 and Rs 10, respectively, for initial two hours. Thereafter, they have to cough up Rs 30 and Rs 10 every hour. There are two such slots.

"The orange parking areas will be on the roadside so charges will be more. There are seven orange slots, where per-hour parking rate for four-wheelers will be Rs 40 and Rs 10 for two-wheelers. The same rates will be applicable every additional hour," Kumar added.

Parking for the first 10 minutes at all the three zones will be free. There will also be a red zone on Main Road, where vehicles cannot park.

Erring vehicles will be either fined by or towed away by traffic police.
