Jamshedpur, April 3: Outsiders beware.

For Karim City College has decided to introduce uniforms for students of regular courses both at the Intermediate and degree level to identify outsiders and keep them out.

“About 15 per cent youngsters share classroom space with our students or loiter on the campus and we are unable to control their entry due to the non-uniformity in dressing styles,” said Md Zakaria, the principal of Karim City College.

Being introduced from the new academic session this July, a uniform would be in place for Part-I Intermediate and first and second-year students of arts, commerce and science streams at the degree level.

Though the college authorities are yet to come up with the proposed colour scheme for the uniform, a trouser and shirt for boys and a salwar kameez set for girl students has been shortlisted. A committee comprising heads of some departments would be formed to decide on the colour of the uniform.

“The children themselves want the implementation of an uniform on the campus. They think this will help them to get along with one another,” said the principal.

Currently, the college has uniforms for students of the three professional courses of mass communication, computer application and Information Technology (IT).

“For long, we have been working on introducing uniforms for different courses but were not too sure if youngsters would be keen on its implementation. A feedback from them made us go ahead with the same,” added the principal.

However, there was a mixed response from students when asked whether the dress code was acceptable.

While some welcomed it, others said a dress code would dampen the freedom of college.

Already approved by the college governing body, students would be free to get their uniforms stitched by tailors of their choice as college authorities would provide neither the dress material nor tailoring facilities.
