The Tata-Kandra four-lane road, considered the lifeline of the Adityapur industrial area, will come under hi-tech surveillance soon.

Under an initiative of the Seraikela-Kharsawan district police, CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic points along the 15km road to curb accidents and crimes.

Superintendent of police Rakesh Bansal said he had submitted a proposal to Seraikela-Kharsawan deputy commissioner Ramesh Gholap for installing cameras on the accident-prone Tata-Kandra road.

"We took the initiative to set up surveillance cameras after a private company offered to bear the expense. In the first phase, we have decided to install 24 cameras on strategic points between the Kharkai river at the Jamshedpur end and Kandra toll plaza at the Seraikela end. In the second phase, more such scanners will be installed," Bansal said.

The SP said the movement of heavy vehicles on the road was quite common as it was a lifeline for the sprawling Adityapur industrial area.

"However, in the absence of a traffic signal system, heavy vehicles tend to drive recklessly, leading to frequent fatal road mishaps. The installation of CCTV cameras is expected to check rash driving and the number of accidents will automatically come down," the senior police officer said.

Bansal said the cameras would be linked to a control room to be set up at Adityapur thana where the surveillance footage would be monitored round the clock.

Over 2,000 heavy vehicles, as many cars and around 20,000 two-wheelers ply daily on the Tata-Kandra Road. About 140 fatal mishaps happen every year on the road that came into existence in December 2012.

Bansal had last month also sent a proposal to the Seraikela-Kharsawan deputy commissioner for the installation of a traffic signalling system on the road.
