Communal Harmony Week, which spreads the message of national integration and global peace, kicked off at Karim City College in Jamshedpur on Wednesday.

The week is observed by the NSS wing of the college and was flagged off by principal Mohammad Zakaria. Around 2,000 students are taking part in the programme.

On the first day, four students who follow different faiths spoke on what their respective religions say on communal harmony and national integration.

A fund-raising initiative is also being instituted, proceeds of which will be forwarded to the National Foundation for Communal Harmony(NFCH), New Delhi, an autonomous organisation with the Union ministry of home affairs.

The money will be used to fund rehabilitation of child victims of violence triggered by communal strife and terrorism in the country.

Last year, the college had collected Rs 20,000 for the foundation. The target this time is Rs 25,000. While every student is contributing Rs 10, each non-teaching staff and teacher is donating Rs 25 and Rs 100, respectively.

“The week, ending on November 25, will also witness slogan-writing competition and patriotic songs. Students will also take part in an extempore on the role of education in national integration,” said Aquil Ahmad, co-ordinator of NSS at the college.
