Mumbai to Jharia on a Royal Enfield Bullet. Time of travel: around 40 hours minus the short daytime breaks and the night halts. Distance covered: 2,100km. Message: road safety and love for the country. Goal: to surprise his wife and two kids who are in the Dhanbad suburb.
Meet 37-year-old mechanical engineer Ashish Jaykumar Shah who took this adventure trip in just under three days, reaching Jharia, his in-laws' home, on August 9. He could have covered this distance much, much faster, but he didn't. For him, safety comes first.
Throughout the epic journey, Shah's maximum speed was around 70kmph. And he rode like a true professional. He had all safety gear in place - full face helmet, armoured jacket, elbow guard and knee guards, good leather gloves and riding boots.
"I never rode during the night on the highway. This is one of the most important aspect of safe riding. My top speed was always below 70kmph. After every 90 minutes, I took a break," Shah told The Telegraph on Sunday.
Shah, who owns a water purifier business in Mumbai, started his journey from the Maharashtra capital at 6am on August 6. After cruising right through the day, he reached Indore in the evening where he retired for the night. He resumed his journey the next day and reached Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh at night. On August 8, he spent the night in Varanasi before reaching Jharia at 1pm on August 9.
"The journey through the country's hinterland was out of the world. Every few hundred kilometres, the panorama changed. It was such a wonderful experience," Shah said.
"The best part was when I reached Jharia, where my in-laws' stay. My wife and my two girls are here. They had no clue I was coming. So, when they saw me, they couldn't really believe that dad was home," he said.
Shah got married with Jharia girl Hemal in 2007. They have two daughters, four-year-old Saanvi and a two-month-old who is yet to be named.
"Biking is my hobby. I learnt riding on a Bajaj Priya scooter. In 2002, I bought a TVS Fierro. I bought the Royal Enfield Bullet in 2012," he said.
In 2014, Shah had taken his Enfield for a Mumbai to Goa trip.
Shah and his family is going back to Mumbai on Monday. Is he leaving his Bullet behind? Absolutely not. Indian Railways will ferry his bike in the parcel van. But that will take a few day's time.
