Jamshedpur boy Selay Soy struck gold at the inaugural Junior National Boxing Championship, which concluded in Guwahati on Monday evening.

The 15-year-old cadet of Tata Boxing Centre floored Sai Swaroop of Services in the 44kg bout. The talented teen scored a 4-2 win to slot home gold.

Selay who hails from a poor family - his father Durgacharan Soy works as a security guard in Mango and mother Surumoy is a homemaker - has reached so far through sheer hard work and concentration.

"He has made us proud. Soy is a fast mover with strong reflexes. The gold medal will boost his confidence," said B.K. Jena, his mentor.

Durgacharan said he wanted to see his son become a champion. "I know that Selay has the talent to reach the highest summit of boxing. I am supporting him to the hilt with whatever little resources I have," the father said.

The unassuming tribal boy boasts golden fists and has never lost a bout since he joined the elite cradle in 2011.

His winning streak began with the All India Inter-steel Plants Boxing Championship at JRD Tata Sports Complex in 2011. Selay had outplayed his opponent in the 28-30kg category.

In 2012, he claimed the yellow metal in the 30-32kg weight section at the state championship held in Noamundi, West Singhbhum, before clinching another gold (32-34kg) at the all India inter-steel plant meet in Jamshedpur the same year.

Agile and strong, the boxer later rained his punches during the National School Games, walking home with another gold, this time in the 34-36kg category in the final bout held in Bhatinda, Punjab, in 2013. Selay also won the 26-28kg top slot at the 2014 Games in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab.
