Ranchi, May 17: Ranchi police is busy drawing up a blueprint to improve the unruly city traffic system.
A dossier on traffic plans includes construction of road dividers and setting up of barricades, demarcating of lanes and widening of roads, laying of new pavements and putting up new traffic posts at all important intersections among others.
However, for the funding part, the police are depending on the corpus of Rs 75 lakhs that has been created over the years from traffic violation fines collected from offenders from across the city.
Superintendent of police (traffic) S.P. Dadanji Sharma told The Telegraph on an average, they collect Rs 2.5 lakh every month from spot fines. Owners of two and four wheelers parking their vehicles at no parking areas, motorcyclists caught without wearing helmets or without proper driving licences are fined. “Fines imposed on all these charges rakes in at least Rs 30 lakhs per year on an average.
“Over the past three years or so, the kitty has grown to a staggering Rs 75 lakhs. We intend to make good use of it now, particularly to fund many of our traffic projects,” Sharma revealed.
The traffic SP pointed out that they would continue to impose heavy fines on offenders to make them follow traffic regulations. The Ranchi traffic police has acquired a crane to tow away two and four wheelers parked at no parking areas to police stations.
However, rash policemen often damage the vehicles while towing them away, admitted the SP.
“Hence, instead of towing away vehicles and damaging them in the process, fines can be imposed and even prosecution proceedings can be launched,” Sharma said.
up Traffic posts made of fibre will be set up at all important intersections. These posts would have a canopy to provide shelter to the traffic policeman. The traffic SP revealed they intend to get sponsors who would pay for posting advertisements on these posts.
Barricades on road dividers will be put up along the entire 30 km of roads that traverse through the Ranchi municipal area. The space on the barricades would for posting advertisements.
