Bihar struggles to avert loss

Ranchi, Nov. 18: Karnataka continued to mount pressure on hosts Bihar on the second day of the Ranji Trophy cricket match at Mecon stadium here today. Bihar needs 110 runs to save itself from an innings defeat.

Beginning from a modest score of 105 for 3 of yesterday, the guest team continued its onslaught on Bihar. Skipper J. Arun Kumar, who was playing on an individual score of 67, could not complete his century and was caught by Moinak Sengupta off Mihir Diwakar.

While Arun Kumar could add only six runs, his colleague Tilak Naidu remained firm on the opposite end and scored an impressive 86 before he was caught by Dhoni off Nikhilesh Ranjan’s ball.

Staying for 199 minutes on the pitch, Naidu is the highest scorer so far in this match.

D. Chougle and B. Akhil also played impressive shots and scored 23 and 68 respectively. At lunch, Karnataka was 239 for 7 in 63 overs.Karnataka was all out 41 minutes before tea. The team took a lead of 188 runs.

Diwakar, Panda and Nikhilesh Ranjan all took three wickets respectively while spinner Shashi Bhushan Choubey bagged one.

Starting their second innings under pressure, Bihar players started stumbling. B. Akhil who had failed to take a single wicket in the first innings, proved to be devastating as he sent four players back to the pavilion.

Tariqur Rahman who had put up a splendid score of 56 failed to live up to expectations in the second innings and was out for duck.

The team could score only 78 at the end of the day. Captain Rajiv Kumar and Manish Kumar were still on crease. Venkatesh Prasad could not bowl today as he has been advised rest for two weeks.

Bihar (First innings): 114 all out. (Second innings): 78 for 4

Karnataka (First innings): 302 all out (lead of 188 runs)
