Ranchi, Feb. 26: Farmers from across the state have been introduced to modern methods of farming at the three-day fair at Birsa Agriculture University (BAU), Ranchi, which kicked off today.

BAU has unveiled its research results, modern technology and experimental findings for the benefit of the farmers at Agrotech 2009 Kisan Mela .

The university’s agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, soil sciences and other departments have set up 170 kiosks at the fair. The theme of the mela is “Modernisation of Agriculture in Jharkhand”. Nearly 100 kiosks are showcasing various techniques that farmers need to adopt to raise crop yield.

Of particular interest to the farmers are the kiosks showcasing various types of organic fertilisers, hybrid crops, fruits and vegetables, BAU’s own variety of T&D pigs, Black Bengal goats and various types of herbal and medicinal plants developed by the university.

Today, the centre of attraction was a horticultural show though. Farmers looked with awe at the five feet tall banana bunch, giant pumpkins (three times the size of a football) yellow brinjals and more than two feet long normal ones.

University officials said that today, the show recorded over 1,000 entries with farmers from Bero, Ormanjhi, Namkum, Pithoria and other villages flocking to it.

The officials further said that more than 1,500 farmers will be brought to the fair every day. BAU has even made accommodation arrangement for all outstation farmers.

Kisan diaries and agricultural calendars containing information about crops and vegetables to be sown at different times of the year, types of seeds to be sown, pests to watch out for and types of fertilisers that required to be brought were distributed.

Meanwhile, Governor Syed Sibtey Razi, who inaugurated the mela, launched an e-extension expert system — BAU’s new website for the farming community. The website will link 4,462 sub-centres (krishi vigyan kendras and extension centres) across the state with each other and the university headquarters on Kanke Road, Ranchi.

The governor also unveiled the statue of iconic tribal leader Kartik Oraon near the entrance of the university campus.

BAU’s efforts to connect with the farmers were lauded by Razi, who was all praises for its vice-chancellor. “I have already granted a second three-year term to Singh so that the BAU can reach new heights of success and usher in a second green revolution”, Razi said.
