Jamshedpur, May 12: Sleek, mobile, light-weight bamboo furniture, which will give a whole new dimension to your sweet home, are all set to flood the markets soon.

The state handicraft department has roped in 20 bamboo furniture trainers from Tripura to impart training to 60 artisans.

Currently being trained in Ranchi, the state department of handicraft is leaving no stone unturned to promote and create a niche for this type of furniture. The department is even trying to make these furniture popular among customers.

Not only are the artisans being trained in making classy furniture, the department has also thought of marketing these products well so that these can compete with other furniture at national market.

Even an expert from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, has also been roped in, who will teach the artisans to come up with unique designs.

“The experts have an eye for perfection. Add to it the technical guidance that they will provide to the artisans,” said Dhirendra Kumar, the director of handloom, handicraft and sericulture department, Jharkhand.

The furniture would be space saving and multipurpose ones, which have become quite a hit nowadays.

First five artisans from different clusters like Seraikela-Kharsawan, East and West Singhbhum and Hazaribagh districts would undergo the training. The two-and-a-half months training would come to an end on June 10, after which the products made by the artisans would be exhibited at a fair in Ranchi. After the training, the artisans will return to their respective clusters and train the remaining artisans in the art of making these bamboo furniture.

The artists are being taught to make bamboo chairs, computer tables, dining table and even rocking chairs, which would be exhibited at the fair.

“We will link the artisans and their products to proper markets so that maximum returns come their way,” added Kumar.

With bamboo furniture becoming popular due to their sleekness, as they take less of space and are easily movable, the market for these furniture seem good.

“We hope to make the most of the situation keeping in mind the response towards bamboo products in today’s world. We want the best deals for our artisans,” added Kumar.
