Ranchi: A teacher of National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), who sustained severe burns from a diya while praying on August 16, died at a Calcutta hospital on Monday amid claims that the varsity delayed medical aid.

Neha Choudhary, 30, taught intellectual property law at NUSRL and was hired on contract three months ago.

Registrar M.R.S Murti said she was praying inside a closed room at her quarters on the Kanke campus that day when her clothes caught fire. "She was rushed to a hospital here and we informed her parents who later took her to Calcutta. She is, unfortunately, no more. We will hold a condolence meeting tomorrow (Tuesday)," he said.

Sources at Devkamal Hospital said Choudhary had received 70 per cent burns.

An anonymous mail, received by media houses on Monday and purportedly written by students, claimed Choudhary died owing to the varsity's callousness. The Telegraph could not independently verify the claim.

At least two students this paper spoke to didn't level allegations against the varsity. "The NUSRL ambulance had taken an ill student to hospital. So, a parent offered his car. She (Choudhary) was taken to RIMS and later to the private hospital," said one.
