Vice chancellor (in charge) of National University of Study and Research in Law Gautam Kumar Choudhary asked the office of the auditor general on Monday to conduct an audit of accounts, fulfilling one of the primary demands of students who had enforced a 72-hour lockout of the campus last week for a thorough overhaul of NUSRL's administration.

Choudhary has specified that accounts for financial years 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 be audited, a university source said.

"Financial records of the university show that there has been internal audits. But no external agency has audited the university's accounts. Thus, for better financial transparency, I have requested the AG's office to conduct the audit," Choudhary said.

On students' demand for an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, Choudhary said, "As the university has been established by a state act, it will be proper for the accountant general of the state to conduct the audit."

Students welcomed the move. "It is good that the university administration has started taking steps to bring about financial transparency within the institute. Today (Monday) examination controller M.R.S. Murty was also given additional charge of registrar," sad a third year student, adding that their efforts to improve the functioning of the university were now yielding results.

Students have voiced five primary demands. These include complete administrative overhaul, including resignation/removal of vice chancellor professor B.C. Nirmal and registrar P.P. Mitra for mismanagement/corruption; audit of all financial records by a competent authority; making public annual audit reports; release of funds by the state government to construction agency CPWD to facilitate completion of the proposed master plan; and a University Review Commission to be appointed by the chancellor, chief justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty.
