Jamshedpur, Feb. 14: There is an air of optimism at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) placement office with about 90 per cent of the school?s students getting placed.

The batch size for the placement was 240 students, of which 220 students have already been placed, said officials of the engineering institute.

Tata Consultancy Services has recruited the maximum number of students (65) from the engineering streams this year. Cognizant Technology Solutions has selected 37 students for its rolls.

Satyam Computers, which have absorbed 22 students, came in third in the absorption race.

Eicher Motors offered the highest salary of Rs 35,000 per month for a student in this batch. Tata Motors came up with an offer of Rs 20,000 per month and Tata Steel, which is here for the first time, came up with a Rs 23,000 per month offer.

Sources in NIT said the placement process would continue for about a year. It began in May last year and will continue till April this year, said NIT training and placement officer, N.K. Narayan.

Several companies have also evinced interest for re-campusing. ?We will soon finalise the date for companies opting for re-campusing,? he added.

Significantly, since the institute was elevated to the status of a NIT in 2003, there has been a positive response from companies visiting the engineering campus.

Companies such as Jindal and Essar, which have recently signed memorandums of understanding with the government, have also expressed interest to recruit students from NIT, revealed officials of the placement department.

Last year, too, the institute had registered a good placement record with about 200 students, out of a batch of 220, getting selected to the various companies.

Sources in NIT informed that about 60 companies from various sectors, including information technology, automobile and core sectors companies, participated in this year?s placement programme.

Several companies also took the benefit of leveraging the potential of online placement, which is being offered by the institute for the first time.
