Kiran Kumari of Rajasthan claimed the Under-16 girls’ discus throw yellow metal with a hurl of 40.68 metres

Pavana Nagaraj of Karnataka, Abhinash Kumar of Madhya Pradesh and Akshdeep Singh of Punjab set new national records on Day 2 of the 34thNational Junior Athletics Championship at Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Ranchi on Saturday.

Pavana created a new record in the Under-14 girls’ high jump by leaping 1.63 metres to eclipse Khyati Mathur’s (Uttar Pradesh) previous record of 1.62 metres achieved in the 2016 national meet in Coimbatore. Bengal’s Bidisha Kundu won silver (1.61 metres) while Samiksha Adsule of Maharashtra managed bronze (1.40 metres).

Abhinash also walked home with a new national record by topping in the Under-14 boys’ long jump (6.84 metres). He shattered the previous record set by Bihar’s Abhinash Kumar who leaped 6.79 metres at the national meet at Mangalagiri in Andhra Pradesh in 2017.

Mahesh Jadhav of Maharashtra (6.10 metres) bagged the silver while Rakesh Hansda won bronze for Jharkhand with a leap of 5.76 metres.

Akshdeep also created a new national record in the Under-20 boys’ 10km racewalk by clocking 40:47.78 seconds, shattering the timing of 41:29.85 seconds achieved by UP’s Satish Patel at the national meet held in Lucknow in 2012.

Haryana’s Juned Khan bagged silver (40:56.16 seconds) and Arshdeep Singh of Punjab managed bronze with a timing of 43.40.33 seconds.

Kiran Kumari of Rajasthan claimed the Under-16 girls’ discus throw yellow metal with a hurl of 40.68 metres, in the process edging out team mate Priti Kumari (38.18 metres) and Vaghmita Balai of Gujarat (36.72 metres).

Jharkhand’s Florence Barla bagged the Under-18 girls’ 400 metre gold with a timing of 56.10 seconds, Delhi’sl Ritika Negi finished with the silver ( 56.23 seconds while Kerala’s Sandra A picked the bronze by clocking 56.25 seconds.

In the Under-16 boys’ 400 metre run, Jharkhand’s Ramchandra Sanga slotted home silver (49.50 seconds), behind gold winner Anshul of Delhi (49.13 seconds). Rohan Baw-ariya from Madhya Pradesh won bronze (49.77 seconds).

Jharkhand’s Pratibha Kumari also pulled in a bronze in the under-18 girls’ 100 m hurdles by clocking 14.47 seconds Kerala’s Aparna Roy won the gold with a timing of 13.76 seconds while Thabitha P of Tamil Nadu won the silver (14.34 seconds).
