New Delhi, July 5: A Meerut youth on the run after allegedly raping four women and killing one of them in the UK while studying there two years ago was held at Delhi airport last night.
One of the women 28-year-old Aman Vyas, who had an Interpol red corner notice against him, was accused of assaulting was 59 years old.
The youngest of the women was 35-year-old Michelle Samaraweera, whom he is alleged to have strangulated to death.
A spokesperson for the CBI, which picked up Vyas just before he was to board a flight to Bangkok, said he would be extradited to the UK soon. “Vyas is in police custody and will be produced in court tomorrow. He will be extradited to the UK soon,” the spokesperson, Dharini Mishra, said.
Vyas, who had gone to the UK in 2007 on a student visa, allegedly committed the rapes and murder between March 24 and May 30, 2009. “Vyas has also been accused of sexually assaulting another woman before attempting to murder her,” said another CBI official.
The cases came to light after Samaraweera was attacked while returning to her boyfriend’s house from a supermarket in east London. Her body was found in a park on Queens Road, Walthamstow on May 30, 2009. The police had linked three other sexual assaults through DNA evidence, following which they sought the help of the CBI. The agency is the nodal body in India for handling Interpol cases.
“Vyas was wanted by the UK authorities for murder, attempted murder and rape,” Mishra said.
