Oak Creek (Wisconsin), Aug. 17 (PTI): A 56-year-old Sikh man was gunned down on Wednesday by unidentified men at a grocery store in Wisconsin’s Milwaukee sending shock waves across the community.

The attack comes nearly two weeks after six Sikhs were killed at a Wisconsin gurdwara. Dalbir Singh was a member of the same gurdwara.

The death of Dalbir has left the community in Wisconsin deeply shocked, even though police termed it as an attempted robbery and ruled out any link to the August 5 shooting inside the gurdwara in Oak Creek area.

Wednesday’s incident took place shortly after Dalbir, who assisted his nephew Jatinder Singh in running the store, closed the shop.

Jatinder said some unidentified men approached them and put a gun to his head.

Jatinder said he and his uncle made it back into the store and pushed the side door shut, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

But one of the men fired a shot through the door, killing Dalbir, it added.

The Singhs are members of the Oak Creek gurdwara, where a gunman opened fire on August 5 killing six worshippers and injuring four persons, including a police officer, before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Dalbir, a regular visitor to the Oak Creek gurdwara, was not present when the August 5 incident happened.

Jatinder had visited the gurdwara that day, but left before 40-year-old Wade Michael Page went on a shooting spree.

Lesson from Sikhs

Harvard professor Diana Eck has said Sikhs have emerged as a role model for Americans.

“It is important to know that Sikhs share three distinctly and deeply American values — the importance of hard work, a commitment to human equality, and the practice of neighbourly hospitality,” Eck said in an editorial in the Dallas Morning News.
