JDU leader's son to help Republican woo Asians in US

New Delhi, Sept. 16: Amrish Kumar Tyagi, son of Janata Dal United general secretary K.C. Tyagi, will help the Republican US presidential nominee, the controversial Donald Trump, try to win over the Asian-American community in the run-up to the US elections.

Amrish is flying off to the US tonight to advise Trump and his managers on how to handle the community, which is the fastest-growing racial group in the US. By November this year, when the US goes to the polls, there will be more than nine million Asian Americans eligible to vote, up 16 per cent from four years ago.

"My job would be to find out the psyche of the Asian community, their demands, expectations and fears and convey them to Trump's team," Amrish told The Telegraph on phone. "We will also design campaign messages to draw the community as well as create databases for Trump's campaign."

Amrish owns a psephology firm called Ovleno

Business International Private Limited, founded in 2010, which handled the campaign for the JDU during the Bihar Assembly elections as well as the Delhi campaign for Arvind Kejriwal last year.

"A team from Trump's campaign had come to India in 2011 and they were impressed with how we work here. Then they approached us for this job, and we agreed. As professionals, this is a great opportunity for me and my company, and I am excited," said Amrish (38), who did not deny that he is taking up a tough job.

In a poll last month where 1,000 registered Asian Americans were surveyed by three Asian-American NGOs, only 19 per cent held a favourable view of Trump, while 61 per cent viewed him unfavourably. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, is viewed favourably by 62 per cent of Asian Americans and unfavourably by 26 per cent.

"It will be a tough job, but as a professional, the challenge is what encourages me to work better. I will basically work as a consultant for them to deal with the Asian population. While the voting pattern of course is different in the US, the psyche of Asians is not, so we will help them there," said Amrish, who is going to the US for 10-12 days initially, but will follow it up with trips till the elections are called.

Asked what his father's reaction was after being told about the job offer from Trump, the junior Tyagi broke into peals of laughter.

"Well, my father told me 'Trump ke paas hi reh jao, wapas mat aana.' (go stay with Trump, don't come back). He told me ki 'socialist ka beta ab Republican ke liye kam karega'(the son of a socialist will now work for a republican). Of course it was all in jest," he said. "But people who know him, know that he is an open minded, democratic man and he has never interferes in my work."

K.C. Tyagi was not available for comment as he was travelling with chief minister Nitish Kumar for party work in Madhya Pradesh, sources close to him say he is proud of his son though he has his reservations about Trump.

In May this year, Tyagi had drawn a parallel between Trump's campaign and the BJP-RSS' style of propaganda.

"Donald Trump's emergence as a serious presidential candidate seems to be in line with the worldwide political trend in favour of individuals holding extremist views. We have a similar situation in India. It's very unfortunate," Tyagi had said then.

For his son, though, it's just a job.

"I might not agree with his (Trump's) views but I am going as a professional to do a job. The job is to help him get the Asian votes, which I will try my best to deliver," said Amrish.
