Chandigarh: Haryana police on Sunday arrested three men, including one of the prime accused, in connection with the alleged gang rape of a school board topper from Rewari, officials said.

Raids continued across several states to arrest the other two key accused, including a soldier, while the state government cracked the whip and moved out the district police chief.

One of the three key accused, Nishu, is in custody, special investigation team chief and Mewat superintendent of police Nazneen Bhasin told reporters in Rewari. A hunt is on to nab Pankaj, a soldier, and Manish, officials said.

The police had on Saturday released photographs and the names of the accused.

The two other men arrested are Dr Sanjeev, who first attended to the woman following the crime, and Deendayal, on whose property she was allegedly raped, state police chief B.S. Sandhu said.

The 19-year-old girl, who had been felicitated by the state government for her board results, was abducted from a bus stop in Kanina town in neighbouring Mahendragarh district on Wednesday. She was on her way to a coaching class, the police said.

She was allegedly drugged and gang-raped inside a room near a tube well in a field, they said.

Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who had an event scheduled in Jalandhar, Punjab, cut his visit short and reached Chandigarh on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Khattar summoned Sandhu to review the progress of the investigation and directed him to ensure the arrest of all the accused, they said.

Rewari superintendent of police Rajesh Duggal, who was accused of failing to ensure prompt action, was moved out and will be replaced by the superintendent of police in the chief minister's security, Rahul Sharma, officials said.

Duggal will now lead a battalion of the Haryana Armed Police in Hisar, they said.

Deendayal has told the police that the three key accused had taken the key to the room from him on the day of the incident, sources said. The police alleged that Deendayal may have known about the crime but did not report it.

The girl's family members told reporters in Rewari on Sunday that the teenager was in "acute trauma".

"The accused should be hanged," her mother told reporters. She said the family had decided to return a cheque for Rs 2 lakh that district administration officials had handed over to them on Saturday under the Haryana Victim Compensation Scheme.

"We do not want this cheque. Is this the price that is being put on the honour of my daughter? All we want is justice. We used to hear about the long arm of the law, but what are the police doing?" she said.

The police have provided security to the family and announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of the accused.

Doctors at the civil hospital in Rewari said the girl's condition was stable, though she was in trauma.

The girl's family alleged that the police had failed to take prompt action on their complaint, citing jurisdiction issues between the police of Rewari and Mahendergarh districts. The police were continuing their raids in Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and some other states, a senior officer said on Sunday. PTI
