Mumbai, Sept. 28: Everyone knows Sachin, the master blaster. Now meet Tendulkar, the dutiful son.
The world’s highest run-getter today moved to his new address — 19-A Perry Cross Road — “very happy” that he had been able to bring along his mother, who lived with him at his old house too.
“It took a long time, but it is a very happy moment. I am especially happy about being able to bring my mother into the house, also my family members, cousins, relatives and especially my kaka-kaku, who are like my parents,” he told reporters outside his five-storey bungalow in upscale Bandra. Sachin lost his father during the 1999 World Cup.
The cricketer, who shifted from La Mer Housing Society, also in Bandra West, said everyone dreams of owning a house. “I, too, had this dream…. The flat where I earlier used to live, I had received it under the sports quota. I have now vacated that place, so that some other sportsman can live there,” PTI quoted him as saying.
The bungalow has been built on a 9,000sqft plot bought in 2008. A two-storey mansion was demolished to build the new house, which has a private theatre, a mini gymnasium and over 10 rooms. It has two floors below the ground level, one for his cars. Sachin is said to have a fleet of 40. The ace batsman, who had appeared in an advertisement for water conservation, has installed a system for rainwater harvesting.
Residents of the area, also home to actor Naseeruddin Shah and tennis player Leander Paes, couldn’t hide their excitement. “I have seen him come and go but never spoken to him. Maybe I’ll get that chance now when he steps out for a morning walk,” said Zubeida Ghulam Rasool, who owns a small kiosk.
“The feeling of living in the same neighbourhood as the humble legend is inexpressible,” said another neighbour.
The legend had earlier shown how humble he was, despite the nearly 15,000 Test runs and 99 international hundreds. “When work began on his house, he had written to families living nearby to say he was aware of the noise being created with a reassurance about causing the least possible inconvenience,” said a resident.
Master blasters can be good neighbours too.
