What David Coleman Headley deposed about the Inter-Services Intelligence, the Pakistani agency

TT Bureau Published 09.02.16, 12:00 AM

Q: Did you discuss your plan to come to India with anyone from the ISI?

A: Yes, with Major Iqbal from the ISI. (In a testimony in a US court in May 2011, Headley had identified Major Iqbal, an ISI handler, as the “mastermind” of the 26/11 attacks. Headley had also referred to Major Iqbal as Chaudhury Khan.)

Q: Do you know Major Iqbal?  Where was he serving?

A: I met him in Lahore but I don’t know where he was serving.

Q: Who introduced you to him?

A: Mr Ali. (Suspected to be Major Sameer Ali of the ISI. Ali is said to have visited the LeT control room during the 26/11 attacks.)

Q: In Pakistan, how many times did you meet Mr Ali?

A: I was arrested in Landi Kotal near the Afghan border. He came to interrogate me. I was discharged because he intervened.

Q: How were you discharged by Ali?

A: Because I was accused of being a foreigner but had a Pakistani ID card.

Q: Why did Mr Ali introduce you to Major Iqbal?

A: Because he thought I could be of assistance for intelligence work in India. Iqbal was working for the
ISI in Landi Kotal.

Q: Who was with you when you were arrested in Pakistan?

A: Abdul Rehman Pasha, a retired major from the Pakistan Army. (Major Abdur Rahman Hashmi alias Pasha is No. 3 on India’s list of most wanted after Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Ibrahim. Pasha is suspected to head an ISI-backed anti-India module called the Karachi Project which focuses on using Indian citizens against their own state in terrorist activities. The 7/11 Mumbai commuter train attacks are believed to have been scripted and organised by him.)

Q: Were you and Pasha to meet a drug smuggler?

A: Yes, because the smuggler could have helped us smuggle weapons into India.

Q: Who was this smuggler?

A: Zaid Shah.
