The 16-year-old girl who lost her limbs when her alleged tormentors hurled her in front of a train in Bareilly on Tuesday night had made an SOS call to her father on his mobile phone about two-and-a-half hours before the incident and told him that she had been surrounded by goons.

“Tuesday was my daughter’s 16th birthday. She had celebrated the occasion with her classmates before going to the coaching centre,” the father told reporters on Thursday. She has lost both her legs and a hand in the attack and is struggling for her life at Rohilkhand Medical College and Hospital, Bareilly.

“My daughter told me over the phone around 7pm that she had been surrounded by some goons. When I asked for her location, she said she was near a brick kiln adjacent to an agricultural field. She asked me to save her. I rushed to the spot but she was not there. Then we went to CB Ganj police station, where inspector Ashok Kumar Kamboj heard me and asked sub-inspector Nitesh Sharma and constable Akash Deep to do the paperwork before moving ahead,” said the girl’s father, a jeweller.

“The policemen asked me to write an application and then they slowly started
writing a missing report.

They wasted about 90 minutes in the process. While we were still at the police station, the personnel received a message from the Government Railway Police around 9.30pm
that a girl had been found injured on the railway tracks,” he said.

“...Unfortunately, the police ignored my written complaints and also allowed the incident to happen,” he added.

Rakesh Kumar Singh, the inspector-general of Bareilly range, said: “Three policemen have been suspended for not taking quick action in the case. One of the accused and his father were arrested on Wednesday. A police team is looking for the other accused persons. The girl is under treatment at a hospital and her condition is critical.”
