New Delhi, Sept. 10 (PTI): Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik has asked his deputies to ensure that schools in their areas take adequate security measures after a five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a peon at her school yesterday.

The deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) of all the districts in Delhi have been asked to talk to school authorities and conduct regular security audits.

"The DCPs will be advising schools to hire staff from authorised agencies. The schools should get a police verification done of the hired staff," said Dependra Pathak, chief spokesperson, Delhi police.

A security audit means checking whether the children are left unattended at any time, which areas the staff and children have access to, and whether the teachers are handing the children over to their parents or leaving them unattended, the officer explained.

The schools will be asked to ensure they have CCTV cameras on the premises.

A 40-year-old peon with Tagore Public School, Shahdara, has been arrested for allegedly raping the girl.

A day earlier, a seven-year-old boy had his throat slit in the washroom of his Gurgaon school for allegedly resisting sexual assault by a school bus conductor.
