Sangh's varsity labels

• NEW DELHI: Banaras Hindu University is a symbol of Indianness while Jawaharlal Nehru University is one of "un-Indianess", senior RSS leader Manmohan Vaidya said on Monday. There are two ideas of India, one from the West and un-Indian in nature, and the other completely Indian, Vaidya said during an event to mark the 70th anniversary of Sangh weeklies Panchajanya and Organiser. The JNU students' union has alleged that a woman constable assaulted its vice-president, Simone Zoya Khan, at a police station after it staged a protest near the Jammu and Kashmir Bhavan against the rape and murder of an eight-year-old Kashmiri girl. 'Virginity ritual'

• PUNE: Three men were allegedly beaten up by members of their own Kanjarbhat community for opposing the practice of determining the virginity of a bride on the wedding night, a ritual followed by their caste's panchayat. PTI

Dam safety

• NEW DELHI: The first International Dam Safety Conference will begin in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala on Tuesday, the government has said in a statement. The two-day conference will discuss various safety-related issues of large dams. As many as 550 delegates from over 20 countries, including the US, Switzerland, Spain and Australia, will take part in the conference. PTI

Accidents kill 7

• JAIPUR: Seven people have been killed and six injured in two separate road accidents in Rajasthan, police said on Monday. A SUV over turned on the Jaisalmer-Barmer Highway, killing five. Two persons working with the Rajasthan public health and engineering department were killed after their car overturned near Kodamdesar. PTI

Hearing deferred

• GURGAON: A Gurgaon sessions court on Monday deferred till February 2 the hearing on a case relating to the murder of a seven-year-old boy in a private school because judge Jasbir Singh Kundu was on leave. PTI

Four die in collision

• SRIVILLIPUTHUR (TN): Four people were killed when the autorickshaw they were travelling in collided with a lorry at Kadaneri here on Monday, police said. PTI

Charges on Qaida suspect

• NEW DELHI: Delhi police on Monday filed a chargesheet against suspected al Qaida terrorist Zeeshan Ali, who was deported from Saudi Arabia in August last year. He has been accused of trying to set up a base outfit in India and delivering provocative speeches to recruit youths. Additional sessions judge Sidharth Sharma posted the matter for February 2, when the court will decide on taking cognisance of the chargesheet. Ali's name, along with that of 11 others, was disclosed by a Syed Anzar Shah and four others. PTI

Medical rep

• KANPUR: A 30-year-old medical representative was shot dead by two unidentified persons on Monday in the Kagzi- Mohal locality here, police said. Zaheer Abbas alias Shawez, a resident of Chote Miyan Hata, Colonelganj, died on the spot. Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen two men fleeing from the scene after gunshots. PTI

Rapid response

• THANE: Residents of Naupada in Thane have felicitated police personnel who reached in less than four minutes the premises of a 26-storey building that caught fire on Friday. The police team rescued the several trapped residents, including children and the elderly. The felicitation was held on Saturday. PTI

Blaze bravehearts

• THANE: Local police here arrived at the spot of an ongoing blaze last week in under three minutes, and rescued people trapped within the premises. Their efforts were lauded at a function here on Sunday organised by local residents. A 26-storey building in the area had caught fire on Friday afternoon. Naupada police rushed to the spot within 3.31 minutes, officials claimed. PTI

Mangalore murder

• MANGALORE: A 45-year-old man was hacked to death by unidentified assailants at his house in Bengre here on Monday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Shivraj. The brother is alleged to be a local gang member. PTI

Mall suicide

• NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the ninth floor of a mall in west Delhi's Janakpuri on Monday. PTI
