New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi said on Saturday that there was an atmosphere of fear in Gujarat as people had told him wherever he went that the government was suppressing them.
Starting his fourth three-day tour of poll-bound Gujarat with a darshan at the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar, the Congress vice-president addressed several rallies.
At one rally, he said: "Every section of the society is embattled. Farmers, youths, industrialists... everybody says we are being suppressed. There is an ambience of fear and injustice."
Asserting that the people were fed up of "coercive measures and false promises", Rahul threw a challenge at the BJP. "Ministers are coming to Gujarat, chief ministers are coming. Laga lo jitna dum lagana hai, jitna paisa lagana hai (Deploy all your energy and resources)," he said, "Your government is not coming back."
Rahul said the people of Gujarat would decide who would win "this battle of truth and untruth, between the ground reality and the BJP's marketing".
According to Rahul, all the decisions of the BJP government were aimed at sprucing up Prime Minister Narendra Modi's image.
Rahul said: "Modi works for a few corporate friends and none of the promises made to the people has been fulfilled. The money given to the Tatas for the Nano project - Rs 33,000 crore - could have been used in waiving farm loans and giving education and health care to the poor."
Congress general secretary Ashok Gehlot too referred to the "atmosphere of fear" and sarcastically sought the shifting of the Prime Minister's Office to Ahmedabad as all the ministers were frequently coming to Gujarat to campaign for the December 9 and 14 elections.
