Nalgonda, June 17 :     The aggression in Kargil by Pakistan was a ?desperate attempt? to refocus international attention on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, home minister L.K. Advani said today. Pakistan was now ?repenting? as the proxy war had proved to be ?costly?, and the world had supported India?s role, Advani said at a meeting here. The men waging war at Kargil were not Kashmiris, but Pakistan-trained Afghans who spoke only Pushtu and Persian, and not Kashmiri, he said. Advani arrived in Hyderabad today on the renaming of the domestic passenger terminal at Begumpet as ?NTR domestic departure terminal?. He admonished party workers who raised BJP slogans for ?converting an official function into a party meeting?. In Hyderabad, Advani spoke to state party leaders for two hours, and received a courtesy call from the chief minister. At the Nalgonda meeting, the home minister said the Indian army will not rest till it drove the intruders and the ?Pakistan army? beyond the Line of Control. The soldiers will fight till death to push the intruders back, he said. The BJP government had reinstated Indian spirit in Kashmir and revived tourism there. ?Had we allowed a free hand to our armed forces for four or five days in 1947, the issue could have been resolved to our benefit,? he said. Advani said he did not foresee a war with Pakistan, but any prudent government should be prepared for the worst. ?We want peace but those who want peace must always be prepared for war,? he said in a television interview. He said Pakistan had miscalculated two factors while undertaking the Kargil operation ? it had misjudged Indian response and world opinion, and also the strong counter-offensive launched by the Indian government and army. ?It is only a matter of time before this offensive fails,? he said. Advani appealed for generous donations to the military relief fund for the Kargil victims.
