Oxford hunt for Hindi word
• NEW DELHI: Oxford Dictionaries will have a Hindi word of the year for 2017. This word of the year will be announced in January 2018. Oxford Dictionaries has called on Hindi speakers across the country to help choose the word. Submissions need to be made before November 29. Following the public suggestions, the word will be chosen by the Hindi Dictionaries team at Oxford University Press along with an advisory panel of language experts. PTI
Bird-hit flight
• CHENNAI: A Doha-bound flight carrying 134 passengers on Thursday suffered a bird hit, prompting it to return here, airport officials said. The aeroplane suffered the bird hit after taking off from Anna International Airport. Subsequently, the flight returned to Chennai and made a safe landing. The passengers were accommodated in an alternative flight. PTI
Coach catches fire
• NEW DELHI: A fire broke out in a camping coach used by railway staff at Delhi Cantonment station on Thursday, a rail official said. No injuries have been reported, the official said. The camping coach, a renovated compartment used by track maintenance staff, was at the station when it caught fire at around 2:30pm. A Northern Railway spokesperson said the cause of the fire was not known. PTI
Patient found dead
• MUZAFFARNAGAR: A 48-year-old man, who was reported missing from a hospital three days ago, was found dead near a railway track at Uttar Pradesh's Begarazpur on Wednesday. Police said the body had been sent for post-mortem. He was admitted to a Muzaffarnagar medical college on November 12. PTI

• COIMBATORE: The directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption seized about Rs 60,000 in unaccounted money from the sub-registrar's office at Udumalpet in Tirupur district, police said on Thursday. PTI

• KISHTWAR: Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested two drug peddlers and seized 10gm of heroin and 1.5kg of cannabis from them, an official said on Thursday. The accused said they had bought them from Punjab. PTI
Doctors call off strike
• BANGALORE: Private doctors in Karnataka opposed to a government move to cap hospital costs have called off an agitation after four days following a high court directive to resume work. The doctors decided to return to duty on Friday. All out patient departments in private hospitals in Bangalore were shut since Thursday morning. All other services were available. In the rest of the state, the OPDs had been shut since Monday. Chief minister Siddaramaiah has agreed to meet the doctors.
Teacher hits child
• HYDERABAD: A five-year-old boy was allegedly hit by his teacher with a stick at a private school in Tarnaka area here on Thursday. Police said the boy, a UKG student, was taken to a hospital for treatment. The boy had allegedly beaten up some of his classmates and to control him, the teacher apparently hit him, the police official said, citing preliminary probe. PTI
BJP leader shot
• GREATER NOIDA: A local BJP leader and his driver were shot dead on Thursday by unidentified assailants in the Bisrakh area here, police said. Former village pradhan Shiv Kumar, his driver and security guard were going towards Ghaziabad in a car when the incident took place. The security guard has been hospitalised. PTI

• HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Metro Rail Corporation has taken several measures to make travel comfortable for the disabled, a senior official said. He said disabled commuters will have a ramp right at the road level so as to make wheelchairs accessible to lifts and ticket-vending machines have been designed to help people with speech impairment. Omar's ex-wife plea
• NEW DELHI: Delhi High Court on Thursday sought the stand of Payal Abdullah, estranged wife of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, on his plea challenging maintenance proceedings. It asked Payal to file her response by November 24 on Omar's plea claiming that the petition moved by her and their two sons seeking maintenance from him was not maintainable. Omar's lawyer argued that Payal has her own business and a house in Delhi and she has to establish that she cannot maintain herself to be entitled for the relief. PTI

• CHENNAI: Madras High Court has issued notice to the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government on a plea seeking a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the family of a farmer, who died after being allegedly assaulted by a bank's loan recovery agent in Tamil nadu's Tiruvannamalai district recently. PTI

• JODHPUR: Ganga Kumari is set to be Rajasthan's first transgender police constable. Ganga, who appeared for the exam in 2013, has fought a long battle in Rajasthan High Court to claim her right to don the uniform. The high court passed the judgment on Monday and directed the city police department to appoint Ganga in six weeks. PTI

• RAMESWARAM: Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 10 Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing in the country's territorial waters, a navy official said on Thursday. The Northern Naval Command, on routine patrol, also seized fishing trawler of those fishermen when they entered the Sri Lankan waters on Wednesday. PTI

• CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday opposed in Madras High Court the plea of Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, seeking parole for a period of six months. The court said that she was not eligible for the relief. PTI
