A senior police officer who was being treated for depression is suspected to have jumped off the 10th floor of the Delhi police headquarters on Thursday morning, the alleged suicide coming days after he rejoined work following nearly a month in hospital.

Prem Ballabh, 53, a Delhi police assistant commissioner who got a medal for meritorious service two years ago, was found lying near the porch of the entrance to the headquarters in the capital’s busy ITO area.

Sources said police personnel had heard a loud thud around 11am and rushed out to see Ballabh in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

“A preliminary probe has suggested he was suffering from acute depression and committed suicide. He had spent nearly a month at a government hospital and rejoined five days back,” said an official.

Ballabh, part of the crime and traffic unit for the past few years, had joined Delhi police as head constable in 1986, rising to the rank of assistant commissioner in 2016, the year he was awarded the police medal for meritorious service. He had earlier served as personal assistant to senior officers.
