New Delhi, July 31: Delhi and various other areas in neighbouring states faced a power cut for the second successive day on Tuesday as the Northern Grid failed again

Top officials said the grid failed at around 1:30pm following which power supply snapped in all areas of the national capital.

Shortly after this, Union power ministry officials said the eastern grid had also collapsed. An official of the West Bengal State Electricity Supply Corp confirmed this. In Kolkata, which is supplied by private power utility CESC Ltd, some areas went without power briefly around noon but it could not be confirmed if this was due to the grid failure.

According to reports available at 2.15pm, power supply was disrupted in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Assam and Punjab, among other states.

Entire north India had plunged into the worst power crisis in a decade on Monday, throwing normal life out of gear for several hours in eight states when the northern grid collapsed.

At around 1:30pm, Delhi had a demand of around 4000mw out of which only 38mw was being supplied at around 1:45pm.

Power minister Sushilkumar Shinde said: “We are looking into the matter”.

On Monday, after the northern grid had failed, he had announced the formation of a three-member panel to find out the causes.

On Tuesday, train services in the northern states were again hit. So were the Delhi Metro services. Trains came to a standstill. On Monday, since the power failure had happened before dawn, services began late, but trains were not stuck.

In West Bengal, train services were halted in the Asansol, Sealdah and Howrah divisions.
