As many as 29,970 persons died and 30,214 were injured on Mumbai’s suburban train network in the last 11 years, according to the Government Railway Police (GRP).

Between January 2014 and May 2025, altogether 6,760 commuters died and 14,257 were injured after falling off trains, as per the GRP data available with PTI.

In the latest such incident, four commuters, including a GRP constable, died and nine were injured after falling off two overcrowded local trains near Thane in Maharashtra on Monday.

During the last 11 years. As many as 16,087 persons died and 3,369 were injured while crossing railway tracks, as per the data.

While 103 died and 655 were injured after hitting against a railway pole, 147 died and 125 were injured after falling in the gaps at railway platforms.

As per the data, 181 persons died and 203 were injured after coming into contact with live electric wires.

According to the data, 676 persons ended their lives on railway tracks in the last 11 years and five were injured while attempting suicide.

Around 75 lakh commuters travel daily on the Mumbai suburban network.

Commuters hanging from the doors of overcrowded local trains is a common sight in Mumbai.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday that the Central and state governments are working on a master plan with adequate measures to avoid accidents on local suburban trains and ensure passenger safety.

Fadnavis admitted that the delay in the completion of Metro projects has proved detrimental in decongesting crowded local trains.

“Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a two-hour-long discussion with me after Monday’s incident on effective measures to address the problems of overcrowding in local trains during rush hours,” he said.
