Village head

Kanpur, Oct. 30 (PTI): A Thakur-dominated village in Kanpur’s Ramabainagar district has finally got its gram pradhan after a wait of five years. For five years the village remained a reserved seat and did not get a single nomination for the gram pradhan post as Dalits were too scared to come forward, sources said.

The village was declared a general panchayat recently. Ashish Singh, who belongs to the Thakur community, was elected pradhan in the panchayat polls held on October 20.

Lizard in meal

Seoni (PTI): Seventy-seven students of a school at Seoni in Madhya Pradesh fell ill on Thursday after eating their mid-day meal, in which a dead lizard was found, official sources said.

City model

Mumbai (PTI): The boyfriend of Calcutta model Rinky Choudhury was arrested on Saturday on the charge of murder, two days after she was found hanging in her flat in Mumbai. “Her boyfriend Sahil Malik was arrested on the basis of circumstantial evidence,” police said. He frequently changed his statements, the police added.

IIM pact

Kochi (PTI): The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, will be signing a memorandum of understanding with 10 top Chinese universities, its director Debashis Chatterjee said.

Electrocution

Erode (PTI): A poacher was electrocuted and another suffered burns in the Sathyamangalam forest in Tamil Nadu on Friday night, police said. The two had tried to enter a private land to fell trees and came in contact with an electric fence put up by the owner to scare away wild animals.

Road deaths

Hyderabad (PTI): Eight members of a family were killed and six others injured when a lorry dashed against their car in Andhra Pradesh’s Medak district, police said. The incident took place on the Hyderabad-Mumbai national highway when the driver of the lorry lost control over the vehicle after a tyre burst.
