Jiah friend

Mumbai, June 21 (PTI): A sessions court today rejected the bail plea of Suraj Panscholi arrested on charges of abetting Jiah Khan’s suicide.

The plea was rejected after the prosecution said the investigations had reached a crucial stage and Suraj’s release might hamper the probe. Jiah hanged herself on June 3 from the ceiling fan in her first-floor flat in Juhu’s Sagar Sangeet building.

Warranty rule

New Delhi (PTI): A consumer forum has directed Dell India Pvt Ltd to refund Rs 42,200 to a customer for selling him a laptop that stopped working within two years of its purchase. The forum held the company liable to pay as “the laptop stopped working completely when it was still under warranty”.

Voyeur held

Ghaziabad (PTI): A waiter has been held for filming a Russian tourist while she was sleeping in her hotel room. Sunil entered the girl’s room by swapping the hotel card and started filming her on his mobile. However, she woke up and raised the alarm following which Sunil was caught.

J&K tunnel

Banihal (PTI): The 11km-long rail tunnel between Banihal and Qazigund is ready for use. The tunnel has nearly 200 CCTVs, 25 telephone booths and a number of auto sensors installed to ensure a hassle-free journey. The Prime Minister will attend the inauguration on June 25.

Jain script

London (PTI): An ancient Jain manuscript, considered sacred by the community, has been named one of the rarest documents in the world by Unesco. The international body said Shantinatha Charitra was of “lasting value to mankind”. It said the Indian entry offered a universal message of friendship, global peace and unity with integrity.

Airport gold

Chennai (PTI): Five Sri Lankans have been detained at the airport here for allegedly possessing 10kg gold jewellery without valid papers. The jewellery had been concealed in the suitcases of the passengers who arrived from New Delhi.

Building collapse

Mumbai, June 21: Ten persons including five children were killed when a three-storey building in collapsed in Thane on Friday.

Shakuntala Building, which collapsed around 2am, had shops on the ground floor. The first and second floors were occupied by about 10 families.

Ishrat case

Ahmedabad (PTI): A CBI court here has declared Gujarat IPS officer P.P. Pandey an absconder in the 2004 fake encounter case of Ishrat Jahan. He has been directed to appear before the court by July 31 to avoid further action.

WW II shells

Tinsukia, June 21 (PTI): At least 742 cartridges from the time of World War II were found by construction workers digging earth in Assam’s Tinsukia today, official sources said.

The workers informed police who will hand over the cartridges to the appropriate authority. The bullets have the years “1941” and “1942” inscribed on them, the sources said. Such findings are common in the area as an army centre was located here during the war.

Toy kills baby

Kochi (PTI): An eight-month-old boy died on Thursday when he swallowed a part of a toy he was playing with at Perumbavoor in Kerala. Riyan’s mother rushed him to hospital when he started crying, but he could not be saved, police said.

‘Amma’ water

Chennai (PTI): The Tamil Nadu government will launch nine Amma Mineral Water plants that will offer one-litre bottles at Rs 10. Chief minister Jayalalithaa’s party cadre call her “Amma”. The move follows the recent strike by packaged drinking water firms after 92 of them, operating without licence, were shut down by the state.

Indian artist

Beijing (PTI) An Indian artist’s work was showcased at the prestigious Xu Yu gallery here. Three works by Sasmita Mishra Sahu, the only foreign entry, were displayed at the event organised by China’s Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Heritage forts

Jaipur (PTI): Six forts in Rajasthan got the World Heritage Site status from Unesco on Friday. The forts are Amber, Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Jaisalmer and Gagron. State tourism minister Bina Kak said: “The selection will pave the way for other monuments to be nominated for being included in the World Heritage List.”

Fragging

Sriganganagar (PTI): Two BSF jawans were killed on Friday in a suspected incident of fragging in Rajasthan. Deepender Singh and Badal, part of the deployment on the Pakistan border, were killed after a shootout broke out between them, official said.
