KN Raj is dead

Economist K.N. Raj, who served as economic adviser to Prime Ministers from Jawaharlal Nehru to P.V. Narasimha Rao and co-authored India’s First Five-Year Plan document, died in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. He was 85 and is survived by two sons.

Rooted “in progressive libertarianism that stopped short of radical Marxism”, Raj founded the Centre for Development Studies in Kerala in 1971. A product of the London School of Economics (LSE), Raj was instrumental in setting up the Delhi School of Economics.

TN govt fined

Madurai (PTI): Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to pay compensation of Rs 10.07 lakh to the family of a Sri Lankan who was shot dead by a warder outside the central prison in 2007. The victim was on a visit to Tamil Nadu.

Reality show

New Delhi (PTI): STAR India approached Delhi High Court on Wednesday seeking its direction to the Centre not to interfere in the broadcast of the second season of its show Sach Ka Saamna. The channel sought a stay on the notices issued by the information and broadcasting ministry, which alleged that the show violated the programme code.

Lifers freed

Madurai (PTI): Madras High Court has ordered the release of three persons who were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder in 1997.The court said they were minors at the time of the crime.

Scribe held

Jammu (PTI): A journalist of a Hindi daily has been arrested for allegedly posing as a top income tax official and extorting money from a businessman, police said. He was allegedly calling the businessman for the last 4-5 days, posing as chief commissioner of income tax and demanding Rs 10 lakh.

V-day cards

Coimbatore (PTI): A Tamil Nadu-based Hindu outfit burnt Valentine’s Day greeting cards on Wednesday to protest the February 14 celebrations. Hindu Makkal Katchi said the government should not allow V-day celebrations.
