Militant held

Srinagar, Sept. 9 (PTI): Lashkar commander Manzoor alias Shams Bhai was arrested by security forces from Kashmir’s Baramulla district today.

zoor, the “chief co-ordinator” of the outfit, was held during a joint operation by the army and police. An army official said Manzoor is responsible for Lashkar’s militant activities in the Valley. The police said one pistol, two hand grenades and four mobile phones were recovered from his possession.

Fatal prank

New York (PTI): An Indian-origin teenager was killed in Colorado on Friday when she jumped out of a closet to surprise a friend, who shot her thinking she was an intruder. Nerrek Galley, 21, has so far not been charged over the death of Premila Lal, 18.

Chandila bail

New Delhi (PTI): Cricketer Ajit Chandila and two others, arrested for their alleged involvement in the IPL spot-fixing scam, have been granted bail by a Delhi court that said there were some “missing links” in the case. The trio were given bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 with a surety of the like sum.

Indian doctor

Melbourne (PTI): A 36-year-old Indian-origin doctor, who served 18 months in jail for sexually assaulting a 19-year-old patient in Australia, has been taken into the immigration department’s custody. Suhail Durani’s permanent residency was revoked in May.

Pat for CBI

New Delhi (PTI): The Interpol has described the CBI as a “powerful and respected” voice in international arena that has placed India at the forefront of global policing. Interpol secretary general Robert K. Noble’s praise came at the CBI’s golden jubilee celebrations here.

‘KGB’ rap

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court has taken exception to an advocate referring to former Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan as KGB in a petition saying: “How can you use such term?” M.L. Sharma in his petition sought removal of Balakrishnan as chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission.

AIR news on SMS

New Delhi, Sept. 9: All India Radio today launched an SMS-based service to provide important news to subscribers across the country.

I&B minister Manish Tewari launched the service. People willing to subscribe to the service can make a request on the number 0802080820. “Every SMS will have 3 to 4 news headlines along with an advertisement tag,” a senior official said. Subscribers will receive news alert thrice a day.

Juvenile relief

Mumbai (PTI): Bombay High Court has ordered the release of a convict serving life term holding that he was a juvenile when the offence was committed. Nawab Ali Dinhulhasan Sawant was convicted of murder by a sessions court, following which he moved the high court.

Mid-day case

Chhapra (PTI): An accused in the Chhapra mid-day meal tragedy surrendered in a Bihar court on Monday. Arjun Rai, husband of school principal and main accused Meena Devi, has been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody. The tragedy had claimed 23 lives.
