New Delhi, May 31: Sometime over the past couple of weeks, US President Donald Trump edged past Prime Minister Narendra Modi to become the most followed world leader on Twitter.

Modi's stint at the top was rather short-lived - all of four months as that position among world leaders had opened up for him on January 20 when Barack Obama stepped down as President.

In his four months at the White House, Trump - with his tweets that have triggered many a controversy - has not only made up the 5.6 million lead Modi had over him but also pushed him behind. At 8pm today, Trump's personal Twitter handle (@realDonaldTrump) had 31 million followers and Modi's (@narendramodi) 30.3 million.

In January, Modi had 26.5 million followers to Trump's 20.9 million. Then and now, however, Obama rules Twitterverse with 89.3 million followers for his personal handle @BarackObama. By a strange coincidence, the official handles of both Trump and Modi - @POTUS and @PMOIndia respectively - have similar following at 18.2 million.

Trump and Modi are avid users of Twitter but in case of POTUS, he clearly manages his personal handle and has made more than one gaffe, the latest being his midnight tweet - "Despite the constant negative press covfefe"--- that baffled Twitterati till it was deleted in the morning.

Both have a sizable number of fake followers. Newsweek today reported that 51 per cent of Trump's followers were fake and the last Twitter audit of @narendramodi showed 46 per cent of his following to be fake.
