Calcutta, Nov. 23: The Trinamul Congress has threatened to flood the heart of Calcutta with 50,000 supporters on Monday afternoon, unwittingly showing up the city police.
Trinamul is organising the weekday march to protest the Centre’s alleged conspiracies on the Saradha scandal and the Burdwan blast. The march is scheduled to start at 3pm from College Square and wind its way to Dorina Crossing at Esplanade.
Usually, any clog in the stretch results in a chain reaction of traffic disruptions.
Calcutta police have already denied the BJP permission to hold a rally near Victoria House, not too far from Dorina Crossing. The police have cited traffic concerns — a laudable priority if enforced without bias.
The site near Victoria House is a place where Mamata Banerjee has held several editions of the annual July 21 martyrs’ rally, which draws a huge number of people.
The BJP’s rally, which will be addressed by its national president Amit Shah, is scheduled for next Sunday, not a weekday.
The same Calcutta police have accepted Trinamul’s application for the march on Monday. The mere receipt of the application amounts to permission because the police rarely give in writing the nod to use places other than designated venues like RR Avenue. In the BJP’s case, the police had refused to accept the application.
The BJP is expected to challenge the police decision in Calcutta High Court tomorrow.
“We are determined to organise the rally at Esplanade near Victoria House, where Trinamul has been holding its July 21 annual martyrs’ day rally. But we may have to shift the rally to an alternative venue if the high court does not permit us,” state BJP president Rahul Sinha said.
