In a tweet, activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan referred to a past controversy and questioned the possible choice of the former judge as the Lokpal.

An announcement is expected to trigger a controversy as Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the single largest Opposition party in the Lok Sabha, had boycotted the selection committee meetings.

Kharge had refused to attend as he had been called as a special invitee, not a full member, on the ground that the Congress lacks the required minimum strength in the Lok Sabha for him to be considered the leader of the Opposition.

The selection committee includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.
