Islamabad/Lahore, Nov. 3 (PTI): Reshma, the India-born Pakistani folk singer of Lambi Judai fame who mesmerised music lovers with her trademark rustic voice, passed away in Lahore today after a long battle with throat cancer. She was 66.

Born around 1947 in Rajasthan’s Bikaner in a Banjara family, Reshma’s tribe had migrated to Karachi soon after Partition but the singer, able to perform live in India only in the 1980s when the neighbours allowed exchange of artistes, had once said “the borders don’t matter to me”.

She is remembered for several numbers, including her rendition of the timeless Dama-Dam Mast Kalandar, but it was Lambi Judai from the Subhash Ghai-directed 1983 hit Hero that brought her fame in India.

“Tragic. RIP Reshma,” Bollywood composer Vishal Dadlani tweeted today.
