Mumbai, Feb. 27: Karisma Kapoor today filed a dowry case against husband Sanjay Kapur and mother-in-law Rani Surinder Kapur.
On Thursday, the actor's counsel, Sanjog Parab, had filed a complaint of mental harassment and cruelty against Sanjay and his mother. Police recorded her statement yesterday.
Based on Karisma's complaints and statement, an FIR (no. 98/16) has been registered under IPC Section 498A (husband or his relatives subjecting a woman to cruelty) and other sections.
"We have registered her complaint. Now we will need to record the statements of the accused. A separate FIR may be lodged after that. Right now, there is no immediate plan to arrest the accused based on the complaint only," a source at Khar police station said.
Karisma and her Delhi-based businessman husband filed for divorce by mutual consent in 2014. But last November, Karisma withdrew consent. She claimed Sanjay had failed to meet financial commitments laid down in the consent terms.
The case has taken an acrimonious turn over the years with each side hurling accusations at each other.
Sanjay has said in newspaper interviews that Karisma married him on the rebound after her engagement with Abhishek Bachchan broke up and that she was only interested in his money.
Karisma's father Randhir Kapoor hit back in an interview, questioning Sanjay's character and accusing him of being disloyal to his daughter. He said a Kapoor daughter did not need to run after anyone's money.
Karisma moved to Mumbai in 2012 with her children to resume work in films and possibly take a shot at television.
There have been tabloid reports that Karisma is seeing the head of a pharma company. He is a married man with two kids and has sought a divorce from his dentist-wife.
Sanjay, apart from his reported short-term dalliances, is said to be seeing a Delhi model and socialite who was once married to a US-based Sikh hotelier's son.
In January this year, Sanjay filed a fresh divorce petition along with another petition seeking custody of his children. The cases are pending in the Bandra family court.
Sanjay has also filed an application in the Supreme Court, seeking transfer of the case to Delhi. He fears a threat to his life in Mumbai from underworld don Ravi Pujari.
Apart from the children's custody, a trust fund set up by Sanjay where Karisma is the sole trustee is another contentious issue and is part of the divorce petition.
Under a previous agreement, Karisma had insisted that her sister, Kareena Kapoor Khan, would be her successor as the trustee. Sanjay and his family were excluded.
The trust is in the name of Karisma and Sanjay's children. The couple had married in 2003.
The next hearing in the divorce case is on March 3.
