Mumbai, March 21 (PTI): The Maharashtra government has decided to take action against a senior IPS officer who allegedly filmed the interrogation of Hasan Ali Khan in 2008 and later doctored the tape, a state home ministry official said today.

A CID inquiry concluded that deputy commissioner Ashok Deshbhratar had leaked the tapes of the interrogation by allegedly editing them to sensationalise the matter, the official told PTI.

Ali, a Pune-based stud farm owner, is facing charges of money laundering and tax evasion of $8 billion (nearly Rs 36,000 crore).

The CID report said that Deshbhratar taped the interrogation of Ali in a fake passport case using a spy cam.

Deshbrathar had allegedly made a CD of the investigations in which Congress and NCP leaders were allegedly named as discussing the appointment of the Mumbai police commissioner with the Pune businessman.

In the CD, Ali is purportedly shown speaking about his proximity to Maharashtra home minister R.R. Patil. Deshbhratar has been on sick leave since March 17.
