New Delhi, Sept. 27 (PTI): External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj today put the death toll at the Haj stampede in Mina at 1,090, much higher than the figure of 769 given by Saudi authorities.

She also said the toll of Indians at the stampede had risen to 35.

"Saudi authorities have released photos of 1090 pilgrims who have died in Haj stampede," Swaraj tweeted.

Saudi health minister Khaled al-Falih had put the toll at 769 yesterday.

A 52-year-old woman from Birbhum's Suri, Firdausi Begum, is among the dead, her family said. She had gone on Haj with her husband Mohammad Herastullah, a doctor. Herastullah's brother Abdul Latif said Firdausi Begum was injured in the stampede and died in hospital. Birbhum district magistrate P. Mohangandhi said he had "heard" about the death but did not have official confirmation.
