Graft cuffs on Eastern Command colonel

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a colonel of the Eastern Command's planning and engineering branch and three private executives on charges of bribery. Colonel Shaibal Kumar and the others were arrested from Calcutta last night.

New Delhi, June 18: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a colonel of the Eastern Command's planning and engineering branch and three private executives on charges of bribery. Colonel Shaibal Kumar and the others were arrested from Calcutta last night.

CBI spokesman R.K. Gaur told this paper a Calcutta court had handed them over to the agency until June 22.

In a statement today, the CBI said it had filed a case yesterday against Kumar and the executives of Pune's XTech Equipments - managing director Sharat Nath, director Vijay Naidu and Calcutta-representative Amit Roy - on charges of criminal conspiracy and corruption.

"It was alleged that the colonel had demanded a bribe of Rs 1.80 lakh... in connection with the supply of Power Pack Rock Splitters, which are used by various field formations of the army. The colonel was alleged to have already... accepted a bribe of Rs 50,000... and as part of the second instalment..., the colonel has now accepted Rs 50,000 from the accused company," the statement said.

Naidu was tracked from Pune and arrested after he paid the bribe, it said, adding the cash was seized from Kumar's residence.
