New Delhi: The Union home ministry has rejected the CPM's allegation that national security adviser Ajit Doval was present at a political meeting at the residence of home minister Rajnath Singh on January 14 where BJP and RSS leaders discussed the forthcoming Tripura elections.
In a statement on Wednesday, the home ministry said Doval did not attend any political meeting at Rajnath's residence, but was present at a regular security review session on that day.
On Monday, the Tripura unit of the CPM wrote to the Election Commission requesting it to look into the political meeting, which the party alleged was attended by Doval.
"The MHA has clarified that there is a well-established practice of HM (home minister) holding regular meetings to review national security and public order. These meetings are attended by senior members of the internal security establishment.
"As per the practice, such a meeting was also held on January 14 at the home minister's residence which was attended by the regular members of the group including the NSA (national security officer)," the home ministry said.
"These officials did not participate in any other meeting at the HM's residence on that day," the statement added.
On Monday, the CPM politburo too had issued a statement saying: "Some of the media have also reported that the NSA, Ajit Doval, also attended the meeting. If correct, this is a shocking violation of norms and serious misconduct.
"How can a senior government functionary like the NSA be present in a meeting to discuss the BJP's election campaign?"
