Govt, BJP silent on anti-Sushma trolls

New Delhi: None from the Narendra Modi government had till Monday evening stood up for Sushma Swaraj following Right-wing trolls' abusive attacks on her, in contrast to some of the BJP's political opponents who expressed support for the foreign minister.

Sushma had angered the trolls by first transferring a Lucknow passport official accused of bias against an inter-faith couple, and then re-tweeting some of the hate messages that came her way.

If her ministerial and party colleagues kept mum, so did her own ministry. The foreign ministry spokesperson did not respond to journalists' queries about whether the invective-filled trolling of the minister would be taken up.

Sources, however, suggested it was possible that Sushma may have herself not wanted any official comment to go out from her ministry.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ghanshyam Tiwari summed the situation up in a short letter of sorts.

"Dear PM, You know that ordinary Indians especially women are attacked mercilessly on social media. No one in your govt stands up," he wrote. "When @SushmaSwaraj ji, hon'ble minister, was attacked for many days, yet again no one in your govt/party stood up. Do we matter? Yours truly, Citizen."

Earlier, hoping to score a brownie point, the Congress had taken the lead with a tweet: "No matter the situation or reason, nothing calls for threats of violence, disrespect & abuse. @SushmaSwaraj ji, we applaud your decision to call out the heinous trolls of your own party."

The Congress was referring to Sushma's tweet in which she had said: "I was out of India from 17th to 23rd June 2018. I do not know what happened in my absence. However, I am honoured with some tweets. I am sharing them with you. So I have liked them."

Her explanation had further incensed the trolls, who accused her of playing the "victim card''.

What many found curious was that Sushma, who has kept a low profile throughout the Modi era, should have stirred the hornet's nest with a swipe at what is widely believed to be the Right-wing ecosystem.

Some like Congress politician Abhishek Singhvi complimented her for the grace with which she had taken the trolls on.

"Appalled at the trolling level of @SushmaSwaraj by the usual / some unusual SM suspects. Admired at the way she handled it with dignity & grace. We can all learn a trick from Sushma Ji's book," he posted.

While Sushma has been under fire on Twitter earlier too, what made it particularly vicious this time was the way some of the messages dwelt on her kidney transplant while wishing the worst for her.
